Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue, including skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, which surrounds the muscles.
Within my sports massage treatments, I can incorporate IASTM, acupuncture, dry needling, electro dry needling and/or dry (suction) cupping.
Instruments made of stainless steel with bevelled edges are used to break down fascial restrictions, increasing blood flow to the area and leading to improvements in range of motion, strength and pain perception following treatment.
I often use IASTM within my sports massage treatments.
Kinesiology tape is a thin, flexible tape that
was developed to aid muscle movement
and enhance athletic performance.
It can be used for pain relief, reduction of swelling and inflammation and to provide support to joints and muscles,
When applied properly, the tape can last for 3-4 days and can be worn in the shower.
Kinesiology tape can be applied as part of a sports massage treatment or during a standalone appointment.
Medical acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.
The needles stimulate sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins.
A course of acupuncture usually creates longer lasting pain relief than when a single treatment is used.
Acupuncture can be incorporated into a sports massage or done as a standalone treatment.
A technique in which fine needles are used to release trigger points in a muscle and/or assist with pain management. This can relieve muscle tightness, improve range of motion, improve blood flow and decrease pain.
Dry needling can be incorporated into a sports massage treatment.
Electro dry needling is a treatment that combines dry needling with electrical stimulation to help with pain, muscle tension and healing.
Gentle electrical pulses are sent through the needles to help relax muscles and trigger the body's pain management mechanisms.
Studies have shown that the addition of electrical stimulation may enhance the pain-relieving effects more than dry needling alone.
Electro dry needling can be incorporated into a sports massage or done as a standalone treatment.
Dry cupping applies a negative pressure to the skin and pulls the skin and subcutaneous
tissues upward.
Fresh blood rushes into trigger points and tight areas coming all the way to the surface bringing an oxygen-rich supply and nutrients to the area. The vacuum also lifts and separates scar tissue and adhesions to the muscles, fascia, and other connective tissue.
A handheld suction pump is used to create a vacuum in the plastic cups and this can be incorporated into a sports massage treatment.
Dry (fire) cupping has the same purpose as suction cupping, though it is offered as a standalone treatment rather than be incorporated into a sports massage.
Fire is used to heat the inside of the glass cups, forming a vacuum onto the skin and due to the bevelled edges on the glass cups, this can be more of a relaxing experience to suction cupping.
Cups can be moved around or fixed in place and different levels of suction can be used.
